Canada GST HST Credit 2024
The GST/HST credit is a tax-free payment made quarterly by the CRA to individuals and families with low to moderate incomes. Its purpose is to offset the harmonized sales tax (HST) and goods and services tax (GST) they pay on most of their annual expenses.
Due to high inflation, the GST/HST credit payment amount and family income limit are expected to increase for the benefit year 2024, meaning more Canadians will be eligible for this credit.
Ensure that your tax returns for the 2022 financial year are accurately filed, as there is no need to apply for the GST/HST credit separately. Based on the taxes you filed for the 2022 tax year, you will receive GST/HST credits through June 2024.

Canada GST HST Credit Eligibility 2024
Your eligibility for the GST credit is determined by the CRA based on your tax filing for the previous year. In addition to falling into the CRA’s low-to-moderate income category, you must meet other requirements, such as:
- You must be 19 years or older.
- You are married or were married.
- You live or have lived with your child or children.
- You must be a Canadian resident for income tax purposes in the month before and during that month.
- Your income must meet specific criteria.
Another consideration is whether your child is eligible for the GST tax credit. If they are under 19, you can receive their GST payment on their behalf.
When HST Payments will come in 2024?
Quarterly GST payments are disbursed every three months, totaling four times annually. For the fiscal year 2023–2024, payments were issued on January 5, 2023, April 5, 2023, July 5, 2023, and October 5, 2023.
While the government has not yet announced the dates for GST/HST credit payments in the 2024–2025 fiscal year, it is anticipated they will follow the historical pattern of being distributed on the fifth day of July, October, January, and April.
Once the official dates are released, they will be available on the CRA website. If your expected quarterly GST payment is less than $50, it will be consolidated and paid in a single installment on July 5.
Canada GST HST Credit Amount
The amount of your GST credit payment is calculated using your net income and the number of children under the age of 19. In 2023, a single person might earn up to $496, a married couple up to $650, and a $171 credit for each kid.
While it is premature to make specific predictions, there are discussions suggesting that the tax credit amount may increase to account for inflation and cost of living adjustments.
If you have registered for direct deposit, your GST payment will be automatically deposited into the bank account you designated when you filed your tax return. If you receive HST credit payments by cheque, they will be sent to you by mail.
